How do I configure my sound system and microphone in Windows?

Follow this procedure to configure the microphone and webcam in order to start a videoconference in Glowbl. The procedure is explained for Windows.
To install the hardware, plug it into the computer. If necessary, press the On/Off button.

Note: For wireless devices to work, the device must be connected before opening Glowbl.

Once the hardware has been connected, right-click the Sound button in the bottom-right corner of your computer’s Start menu and select the Playback tab. (If the button does not appear, click the Start menu and search for Sound.)

The following screen should appear.

On this screen, the speaker (or headphones) appears as a playback device (speaker).

The plugged-in hardware is not configured as the default device. (Instead, it simply shows as Ready.) To set it as the default device, right-click and select Set as Default Device.

This configuration causes the sound to be automatically directed to the chosen device. The device switches from Ready to Default Device.

Right-click the Sound button in the bottom-right corner of your computer’s Start menu and select the Recording tab. (If the button does not appear, click the Start menu and search for Sound.)

On this screen, the microphone appears as a recording device (microphone).

To change the name of the device, right-click => Properties on the device and change it to the name you want (here: Microphone to Plantronics Voyager Legend UC).

It is not configured as the default device. (Instead, it simply shows as Ready.) To set it as the default device, right-click => Set as Default Device. This allows you to have it by default, even in other applications.

Common Problems

Microphone

If the microphone does not appear in the list:

1/ Verify that your microphone does not appear in the list. It is possible that Windows reset its name.

2/ Verify that you plugged in your microphone before launching the browser. Restart your browser (not just the tab).

If this does not work, contact us.

Case #1: You lack sufficient permissions:

Presenters only can be heard by all Participants. A specific icon appears on their bubble. Only Presenters have access to the buttons to turn on their webcam and their microphone.

1/ If you are a Spectator, you do not have access to the buttons to turn on your webcam and your microphone. You can check your role on the top right hand corner of the virtual space.

2/ You can request the right to speak by clicking the button “Raise hand”. If your request is accepted, the buttons to turn on your webcam and microphone will appear.

Case #2: Your microphone is already in use:

Verify that your microphone is not already being used by another software program (ex. Skype). If it is, close that other application.

Case #3: Your microphone is configured incorrectly:

1/ Click the gear icon on the virtual space and try to change the microphone. It may be that the wrong microphone was selected.

2/ Verify that the indicator below your bubble moves when you speak into your microphone. This means that sound is being transmitted properly through the microphone.

An echo can be heard when a user’s sound is picked up by their microphone and then sent back to the other users. To fix this type of problem, we recommend using a headset with an attached microphone. If the user causing the echo does not have a headset with an attached microphone, they will need to turn the microphone off by clicking the Micro icon and switching it on only when necessary, to avoid to create an echo.

If this does not work, contact us.

When you try to turn on your microphone or your webcam, the icons might be crossed out. In this case, click “…” next to the mic icon, then go to the settings.
